Honey and Mustard Roast Ham

I first made this for a family Christmas gathering and Mr Hyde loved it. Now it’s a regular on our meal planner. We are lucky enough to have a good butcher at the bottom of our road and get our joint there.

The great thing with the ham is it’s so versatile, we have it in sandwiches, with egg and chips, in a pie or quiche and of course in a broth. The stock from when you first boil the ham is a great base for the broth!

The recipe I use is from the hairy bikers Found here.

Cheesy Dog Treats

140g plain flour

140g oats

70g grated cheese

Put in the oven for 50 minutes

Sloe Gin

Gin seems to be really fashionable at the moment, I’ve never really been that keen on it until I tried Sloe Gin. How nice is it?! It’s so expensive to buy but some one told me I could make my own if I found some sloes.

That was me in research overload, I didn’t even know what a sloe looked like let alone where I could find it. Now I have at least 5 places I know I can get them, apologies but I can’t share where!

Ideally sloes (from a blackthorn bush)need to be picked after the first frost but I find if I wait that long some one has already picked them. I pick them once I see they are ripe and then pop them in the freezer, just like first frost! ❄️

So how you make it:

Get sealable bottle, any size, fill 1/3 of sloes

Cover the sloes completely with caster sugar

Add gin to almost full

Leave in a cool dark place, shake bottle vigorously once a day for a week, then leave for approx 3 month

Strain over muslin cloth in a seize and decant into sterilised bottles, done!

If you pick them in September they’ll be great home made gifts for Christmas 🎄

Banana and Peanut Butter Pup Cakes

I always find baking therapeutic, today I decided to bake for the dog!

I found a recipe for banana cup cakes that was dog friendly and added the extra treats of honey and peanut butter. After only 12 minutes to bake the dog was sat looking at the worktop longing them to cool down. When he tried them the hungry puppy was very happy!

Ingredients:

1 egg

2 tblsp honey

1 mashed banana

80g smooth peanut butter

40g whole meal flour

45g oats

1/2 tsp baking powder

70ml water

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Line a muffin tin with 12 paper cases.

Mix the egg, honey and banana together in a bowl.

Add the peanut butter and mix to a smooth paste then add the flour, oats and baking powder and stir to form a dough. Add the water and mix combine.

Let this mixture thicken for about 15 minutes. Stir then spoon it into a the paper cases.

Bake for 15 minutes then cool on a wire rack.

They will last about 3 weeks in an air tight tub or you can freeze them and defrost later!

Pickled Golden Beet

In the box of veg I had delivered was an unusual item, I had to ask the grower what it was. It was golden beet, I’d never heard of it before. Apparently it’s the same as regular beetroot just a different colour. The only thing I could think to do with it was pickle it, so there you go:

Pickled Golden Beet!

Chicken Pie

Following the lovely lot of veg I had delivered I made a huge pot of Chicken Stew, I made 6 portions and still had some left. I thickened up the stew with some corn flour, made the Pastry and there you go, Chicken Pie!

There was filling left over and pastry, so the hubby got a massive pasty too!

Chicken Stew

So after our delivery of lots of fresh veg, I had some left over chicken from our Sunday roast so I made Chicken stew inspired by Jamie Oliver’s recipe from the ‘Save with Jamie’ book.

The idea behind the book is you have your Sunday roast and the recipes give you ideas for left over meat.

This is what I made and optioned it up for baits at work. I 6 of these and had some left over to thicken up to make a pie later.

Jamie’s Recipe is Here but is didn’t make dumplings with mine.

Home grown veg!

Nothing beats the taste of home grown veg!

This little lot was a gift from a friend that he grew in his allotment, I can’t wait to use it. The only problem is what to make with it, I have so many ideas. Any suggestions?

Spicy Blackberry Chutney

With still having loads of blackberries and running out of ideas of what to make with it I came across a recipe for Spicy Blackberry Chutney. So a nice simple recipe and I had all the ingredients in the Larder. These will go lovely in the Christmas gift hampers!
